Automatic Image Resizing

Today’s digital content is displayed on a diverse set of devices, ranging from large monitors of various aspect ratios, to small screens of cell phones or handheld devices. Existing display standards, such as HTML, support the ability to dynamically resize the composition of the page to enable viewing on different display sizes. During this resizing process, images always remain fixed in size. Memory size is also a consideration when transmitting images over wireless networks, such as cellular networks. The need for automatic image resizing arises. This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of the currently available methods for automatic image resizing [4], [2], [3] and includes an implementation with results of the seam carving algorithm proposed by Avidan and Shamir [1].
